I learned t this with the title 'Suzanna's a funicle man'. In the dark ages of folk before the sixties revival (which started in the fifties) The torch of folk music in England was carried by a group of well to do, elderly ladies. Every year they held (and still do) a folk festival at the Royal Albert Hall. One year, in the forties I think, legend has it that a group of singers from Somerset performed this song and the ladies were most upset.
