'Hymns & Ballads' is a CD album of the Amidons' favorites (shape note hymns, gospel from both black and white singing traditions, American and English ballads, and poems set to music by Mary Alice) in a variety of settings: Peter and Mary Alice's
distinctively strong duo harmonies; the Amidon quartet that now includes Sam's tenor that is a cross between Dock Boggs and Mike Waterson and Stefan's profoundly deep bass; the Amidon/Armstrong Septet where the Amidon four are joined by the extraordinary singing family of Jennifer Armstrong and her two daughters Suzannah and Georgia Rose; and one Sydney Carter gem where Peter and Mary Alice are joined by Margaret Dale and Tony Barrand.

Beyond jazz, blues, or gospel as most know it, this is the powerful trombone shout band music of the legendary United House of Prayer for All People. While much public attention is lavished on brass band jazz of New Orleans, these remarkable sacred shout bands of the Eastern seaboard have remained largely unheard except inside the church built by the late Bishop C.M. "Daddy" Grace. In this first-ever anthology, the top House of Prayer shout bands perform live--showing how a choir of trombone "voices" brings congregations to "one accord" of ecstasy with the Spirit.

This debut release from North Carolina's premiere contra dance band features original tunes, unusual tunes and even a few chestnuts from the traditional New England repertoire. Skillfully arranged and performed, high in spirit and energy, the quartet plays reels, jigs, waltzes and even a tango on fiddle, accordion, clarinet, piano, bass, mandolin, bouzouki, guitar and washboard; special guests add drums (Jim Roberts) and banjo (Joe Newberry) on some cuts.

The Ozarks are home to some of the best traditional fiddle music to be found in America, but it is only rarely heard outside the region. Here one can find old dance melodies from the British Isles mixed with breakdowns that celebrate frontier customs. Interspersed in the blend are the black-influenced two-steps that constituted the original roots of ragtime. This CD, the first of
three, samples the distinctive music to be heard from Salem, Missouri down through the northern counties of Arkansas.

The farmers who homesteaded the plains of Iowa, Nebraska and the Dakotas loved old-time fiddle music every bit as much as their Appalachian compatriots. Dwight Lamb of Onawa, Iowa is heir to this unique pioneer heritage.

New Hampshire is home to a variety of time-honored music and dance traditions. This 1999 studio recording is a collection of dance tunes played by six New Hampshire groups. Built upon a blend of English, French, and Celtic influences, the music features fiddle, guitar, flute, piano, mandolin, and hammered dulcimer. Some of New Hampshire's renowned dance callers invite you to "choose your partners" and join in New England contra dancing, barn dancing, and singing squares.

The Scots pioneers who settled Canada's Cape Breton Island early in the last century underwent many hardships but, through all the desperate winters, they carefully preserved their precious heritage of violin music. Today modern influences are beginning to shade the island's music, but on this truly unique album Theresa Morrison plays a wide range of Scottish music in the best traditional style of her homeland.

Joe Thompson is among the last African-American fiddlers still active in the South. A member of a North Carolina farming family with an active stringband tradition, Joe has been playing music since the 1920s. Released to coincide with Joe's eightieth birthday, this disc documents tunes and songs going back three generations of Thompson family musicians.
