Art, m'lad:
The new Gate of Horn may not have been a true "listening room," but the old Gate of Horn, where I played several extended engagements back in the dark ages, really was. I can clearly remember Alan Ribback inviting a noisy table (during one of Martha Schlamme's sets, for example) to move into the bar area (a separate room). Politely, but firmly accomplished. Martha ordinarily drew a very respectful audience, although the bar didn't do nearly as much business as it did when I played there with Odetta. Martha's crowd just wasn't made up of drinkers.
