In 1945, I harvested wheat for a farmer near Russell, Kansas, who, whenever he was asked what time it was, would look up, squinting, at the sun, slowly draw a big two-dollar pocket watch from his overalls, look again at the sky, then at the watch, then ask: "Roosevelt time, or Gawdamighty time?" I didn't have the heart to tell him it was Ben Franklin's idea. He'd have just found some other reason to despise FDR. Sandy
