New Jersey could do worse than to be without a state song. I grew up in Maryland. It's state song is a lament that the North invaded Maryland during the Civil War. It is very politically uncorrect. Now I live in Virginia. They "did away with" the old state song, "Carry me back to old Virginny" since references to "darkies" and such no longer seemed appropriate. There was an effort to have a "new" state song, but there was no agreement on what it should be and there was great disagreement in reference to the entries in a state-wide contest.
