My father worked one summer in the town immortalized by the movie Boom Town (Clark Gable & Spencer Tracy -- remember?). That must have been about 1920. Anyway, he told me once that he had heard black roustabouts singing:

Takes a wearied man
To sing a wearied song.
Well, I'm wearied now;
Won't be wearied long.

No specific oil field reference, but that was what they were singing. Dad sang it for me, then apologized that it was really more of a chant than a song. I didn't mind.
