It occurs to me that I ought to point out that the verse I quoted above as one I choose to sing rather than the one originally collected with the ballad, namely: Carry me to yonders stile And lay me down while I bleed awhile. was modified slightly from another Appalachian version, collected in 1939 by Herbert Halpert from Mrs. Polly Johnson in Wise, Virginia.
