When I was away at college, I left my Martin D-28 at home, in its case next to my bed. Well, my Dad came home drunk one night and my mother refused to share her bed with him. So he went to sleep on mine, just across the hall. Sometime during the night, my 300 pound father rolled off the bed and onto my guitar.

The only damage the guitar sustained was two bent tuning pegs. The case was definitely in worse shape, but it remained serviceable until about two years ago. It is easier to get a guitar repaired than a wooden HSC. I had to discard it.

I took the guitar into the shop. This was in the 60's and Martin was switching over to the enclosed tuning pegs. The repairman suggested I upgrade and replace the old open backed ones with the new fangled ones. I agreed. Still don't know if that was a good decision. Certainly they were easier to tune, but I guess I lowered the value of what is now a vintage guitar.
