Caroline learned "Miss Mary Mack" in about the third grade, 1940, near Chicago (northern Indiana). "Miss Lucy Had a Steamboat" (not a tugboat) was being chanted by kids I knew in Virginia at about the same time. I heard it again a few years later, also with the steamboat, in central Kansas. We've "collected" both from kids here in Connecticut in recent years, and got a fine tape of "Miss Lucy" chanted a group of girls from the Harlem section of New York back in the summer of 1967. These things have a long shelf-life, which doesn't surprise me at all. Sandy
