Sandy Paton Sandy Paton's Out takes. (4) RE: Sandy Paton's Out takes. 05 Apr 99

We once used a bunch of extras (not exactly "out-takes", but songs I asked our artists to do for me as "extras") on what we called The Continuing Tradition, Volume 1, Ballads; A Folk-Legacy Sampler. It included "I'll Walk the Road Again" by Grant Rogers, "False Knight on the Road" by Tony and Irene Saletan, and a slew more. But it's only available as a "custom" cassette (C-75) or vinyl dinosaur (FSI-75) at this time. Wish it could come out on CD, but we don't have the money to do it with. Reality really bites!

There were a few extra songs on the Frank Proffitt tape I gave to Moe Asch at Folkways (before we started Folk-Legacy), but I've not been able to get them back. Aside from those "extras," I've used all that I have from Proffitt, I'm afraid. Moe also seems to have lost the original tapes I made of Horton Barker, some of which weren't used (including a superb version of "Pretty Sally" that I would love to have again for this new traditional CD I'm doing. My copy of it has come up defective, dammit! So, I'm not holding up anything from them, although I plan more trad CDs of stuff from the Ozarks, North Carolina, and Canada. Forty years of field collecting produces a lot of stuff, but getting it out to the few people who really want it is an expensive procedure. Wish it were otherwise! The Higgins Foundation is making the current project possible, God bless 'em!

Sandy
