Ian,
You are in luck! At the Mudcat there are many things we are short on (brains, good ideas, etc.), but we are never short on opinions, especially opinions about guitars. Below you will find a list of threads on this topic. The first two or so are about "what to buy." The rest are long diatribes on various makes of guitar posted by those who have actually played them. There is lots of good advice. I give you three important concepts that you will also find on these threads. One, consider a used guitar. Two, go to music stores (as many different ones as you can) and play as many guitars as they will allow you to play both above and below your price range. Trying a wide price range helps you to learn what your money ought to buy. Three, if your store doesn't "set up" your guitar, save out about 60 - 70 US dollars to have a luthier "set up" your guitar. It is worth the money.
Lastly, I apologize for our tendency to focus on guitars commonly sold in the US. There are other good makers, we just don't always hear about them or get to play their products.
