Sandy Paton Need original song 'Risselty-Rosselty (4) RE: Need original song 'Risselty-Rosselty 24 Jun 99

Here's a reference list from Jane Keefer's Folksong Index. You might want to bookmark this address: KEEFER FOLK INDEX. It can be a very helpful site.

Wife Wrapt in Wether's Skin
Other titles - Old Man Who Lived in the West ; Rissolty, Rossolty ; Green Valley
1.American Ballads and Songs, Scribners, Bk (1972/1922), p 16
2.American Ballads and Songs, Scribners, Bk (1972/1922), p 17 (Dandoo)
3.Byrd, Ernest. Southern Folk Ballads, Vol. 2. Ballads
- Stories in Song..., August House, Bk (1988), p. 62
(Wife in Wethers Skin - Dandoo!)
4.Campbell, Olive Dame. Eighty English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, MIT Press, Bk (1968), p 47
5.Stevenson, Nancy McCuddy. Southern Folk Ballads, Vol. 2. Ballads - Stories in Song..., August House, Bk (1988), p. 61 (Geely Don Mac Klingo)
6.West, Hedy. Old Times and Hard Times, Folk Legacy FSA-032, LP (1967), cut# 1

Aside from these, Burl Ives recorded "Wee Cooper o' Fife, and so did Jean Redpath on her early "Ballad Book" album for Elektra.

Frank Proffitt sings another "Dandoo" version on the first recording I did of him, the one that came out on Folkways. I also collected a "Dandoo" version from Mack Moody in Huntington, Vermont, but that one has never been used on an album or CD. The Hedy West version from our recording of her (mentioned above by Keefer), is still available as a "custom" cassette, with booklet of notes and texts of the songs. CLICK HERE, then scroll down to the 17th item listed.

By the way, I don't think the item titled "Robin He Married a Wife" that is included when you ask for #277 in the DT is actually a version of this ballad. The essence of the story simply isn't there and, without that, it can't be considered an example of this ballad.

Hope all of this helps a bit. I also hope it comes out as a coherent posting. I'm a bit of a cyber-klutz.

Sandy
