I sang this song at an open mike and dedicated it to my friend, Marie. She assumed I was expressing undying love and it caused her to put some distance in our relationship that did not resolve until I clearly fell in love with someone else. The song is so pretty, that it is easy to ignore what an "asshole" the protagonist is.
