Rick,
In the US, one third of the adults do not drink at all. Another third drink less than once a month. This third probably drinks only on special occasions. The rest are regular drinkers. It is not uncommon that people pick their social network from among the "third" to which they belong.
It is not uncommon for any motivated behavior to be associated with certain places or activities. It is similar to Pavlov's dog experiments. I hope your remember the dogs, the food, the bell and the saliva, 'cause I don't care to do that much typing.
So, are you normal? Well, of course not, who is? However, you're drinking behavior is not unusual.
