Headed for Nashville

A D
I've worked this same job for just too darned long
   A E7
I know that I'm over the hill
 A D
If I don't make it to Nashville real soon
   E7 A
I reckon that I never will.

I paid up my rent and I packed my guitar
I told my boss that I quit
I'm headed for Nashville with all of my songs
Just one of 'em must be a hit.

     D A
The road to success is hard and its long
                     E7
but I'm not gonna complain
     A D
I'm headed for Nashville a singin' my songs
        A E7 A
I don't care that its pouring with rain

Them big eighteen wheelers come thundering along
each one soaks me to the skin
at last I see them brake lights come on
and the driver says "climb on up in"

She said "you're surprized to see I'm a gal
when you was expecting a man
I'm driving this rig putting my kids through school
and I'm doing the best that I can"

The road to success is hard and its long
but I'm not gonna complain
I'm headed for Nashville a singin' my songs
I don't care that its pouring with rain

She told me her dreams and I told her mine
she wished me good luck on the road
and if I don't make it she said never mind
she could use some help sharing the load

I finally made it a singing my songs
far bigger than I'd ever planned
just sitting beside her, drivin along
travelling all over this land

The road to success is hard and its long
but we're not gonna complain
we're headed for Nashville a singin' our songs
we don't care that its pouring with rain.
