It's not only old songs that have this problem. Kate and Anna McGarrigle's "Work Song" uses the word "darkies" in a song that reminisces about songs like "Old Kentucky Home" and the fact that for a number of reasons, these songs are out of fashion, or difficult to use. "Songs that may no longer please us, 'Bout the darkies, about Jesus. Mississippi minstrels the colour of molasses Strummin' on their banjos, to entertain the masses" I have tried to sing this songs a ouple of times, and still find it difficult to work out how to do this.
