Someone told me about the "duel" at Whitby. Did anyone win? I was reminded about an interest I have in singing contests. Two "traditional" ones are mentioned in William's "Folksongs of the Upper Thames" and Baring Gould's "Songs of the West" and Vaughan-Williams recalled a sonmg heard at a "cheapjack singing match". Does anyone have any other references to similar contests - or interesting/funny tales about modern equivalents?
