Excellent again Q. Steel strings do seem to look like a step change in the sort of noise, quality, consistency and so in the musical instruments to which they were attached. Still waiting for a Historian/Technolgist to flesh this out. Between this and that thread dating songs by the use of of other references within them I feel sure we can get a better understanding of how songs and tunes have evolved.
