On the non-performing side of his career, it is interesting to note that Wooley was a "real" cowboy. He had been riding the rodeo circuit in the late forties which helped get him noticed as a potential actor in movie westerns. He continued his life in the saddle nearly to the end, taking part in a working Montana cattle drive in the nineties.
