Joe Offer's site is real good. Also try a thing called halsguide.com, which is an up-to-date list (with descriptions, addresses, etc.) of ALL the joints in the LA area that have Open Mike nights, singer/songwriter showcases, and clubs. And, of course, don't miss the best little club of the bunch- Coffee Gallery in Altadena. As has been said, all of the LA "fokie stuff" is sort of hidden, but there really is a good deal of live music and also playing opportunities once you get plugged in to the underground.
