Albert Pike was a brigadier general in the Confederacy. He organized regiments of indians to fight along with the regulars. At Pea Ridge Union troops accused these indians of scalping dead and wounded soldiers and Pike was put to blame. This and other troubles led to his eventual resignation. He was handy with lyrics and the above eight verses are credited to him. You'll find them in Irwin Silber's excellent work titled: "Songs of the Civil War". His words were applied to Emmett's Dixie in 1861 two years after the original minstrel version. It has also been published as "Everybody's Dixie". Rex
