Unfortunately, the "bigger is safer" theory is one perpetuated by the industry. The reality is that the same rates of people die or are seriously injured in accidents in big SUVs as are in modest sedans. People continue to buy for this reason, but it just ain't true.

petr -- There are tax breaks for hybrids and other alternative fuel vehicles (including natural gas, Mary). They just aren't anywhere near as big as those for large luzury vehicles. Priorities, you know.
