Well, I actually have done this before (at least I think I have), but it doesn't exactly work perfectly. I have passed a fairly strong magnet over the tape itself (cassette tape). It's been awhile since I've done this, but I believe I got bits and pieces of the recorded over part. I must warn you however that it's a good possibility of ruining the tape this way.
