A couple of months ago he did a resume and a history of British comedians that I found thoughtful, and enlightening. He made no bones about Frankie Howerd trying to seduce him on more than one account, and lots of other facts and figures. I didn't know he had Ca prostate -he seemed to have some sort of speech problem which I put down to false teeth, He seemed to be more on the box lately, presumably because of his terminal decline. On the radio, many of his friends reported him to be very sincere and never backbiting, and I thought him to be more cerebral and a technician than a natural performer. I havent heard a bad word said about him, apart from that he supported the mad cow herself. RIP as has been said.
