Codeine Phosphate is an ingredient in pharmacy only pain killers here in Australia. These generally have 500mg of paracetamol and either 8 or 10mg of Codeine Phosphate per tablet. Pain killers with higher codeine content (typically 16 mg) are commonly prescribed for severe pain from injuries and post-op. From experience they are effective pain killers but I have never experienced any sort of buzz - I probably didn't take enough. As noted above Codeine is a close relative of Morphine, so I dare say you could extract it from a bottle of tablets and purify it if you were determined enough. I know that Australians are cautioned to carry a letter from their doctor indicating that it is a medically prescribed drug when travelling to a number of overseas countries with tough anti-drug laws.
