NEW ROOTS
A competition for young musicians

Are you under 25?
Do you sing or play traditionally based music ?

If so, this is for you.

Whether your style is traditional or contemporary folk, roots or world music, whether you perform traditional material or write your own, we'd like to hear from you. There are two categories, under 18 and 18-24. The competition will be judged by Damien Barber, Fay Hield, Lynne Heraud and Andy Stafford.

Prizes include performance opportunities at Towersey folk festival, St Albans folk at the festival, Leigh Folk Festival, Herts Summer Festival, and Redbourn, Hitchin, Waltham Abbey and Stortfolk folk clubs plus others currently being negotiated in Hertfordshire and nearby counties. There will be no overall winner. Instead the judges will give constructive criticism and award the prizes appropriate to the performers.

To enter: Send a cassette, CD-ROM or minidisc with up to 15 minutes of your music to:
Alison Macfarlane, 40 Warwick Road, St Albans, Herts AL1 4DL.

Closing date 29 February 2004

Performers short-listed by the judges will be invited to take part in the final at Trestle Arts Base, St Albans on Sunday April 18 2004. It will be followed by a concert, featuring the judges plus competition finalists.
