Some of the best $400 - $600 guitars I've ever played are made by Sigma -- Martin's mass-produced-in-Korea line. I own a dreadnaught sized Sigma that I really like a lot. Although it's not the sort of thing to make you drool, it holds it's own against guitars twice the price. If you're looking for a instrument that you don't have to treat like a piece of rare Chinese porcelain but has enough tone and volume to play with a group, I'd recommend one.
