There're two philosophies when you cover songs -you either play them just as they were done originally, or completely differently. In this case the first option is not a going proposition because EC's fingerstyle playing is not up to the demands of the material, so he has to play them different to the originals. What I've heard of it I haven't liked, but it doesn't sound like Chicago. It sounds like the 1960s club bands that used to play in the West End of London - which is in fact what it is. In the 60s there were a lot of English bands copying US R&B records, and the best of them didn't sound too bad. That's the roots of the music and the musicians in this case. Alanabit might care to note that there is one other person who is classifiable as EC's lead guitarist, which is Albert Lee, who is also his cousin, and might explain to the Big Pink Lad why EC got interested in country. Me, I've got better ways to waste my money. There are plenty of old recordings on the budget labels of EC when he was still alive.
