The photos do remind me of the photos from that Canadian military unit's initiation rite scandal a few years ago. No doubt frightening to the participants but a bit short of the Bataan Death March and what happened to the survivers in their prisoner of war camps. The military is treating this as serious criminal act. What else would you like, decimating the troops Roman-style to teach them a lesson?
