BMI and ASCAP are right - SPECIFIC arrangements ARE copyrighted. It's why I try to use sources circa 1900 - which are in the public domain.

And I just found an absolutely fantastic site - it not only has a list of public domain music - but public domain sheet music for a great many of them. It's at Web Helper Public Domain Index of Music (http://www.web-helper.net/PDMusic/A/A.html). The pages have an excellent introduction on what it takes to prove an arrangement is public domain.
