Nope Amergin. Yer actual red-back (Latrodectus hasselti) is a native to Oz, but belongs to the Family Theridiidae which is found worldwide. The American Black Widow is a close relative. The only difference seems to be the red dorsal mark - and in case I appear to be overly knowledgeable, the info comes from this site.

http://www.austmus.gov.au/factsheets/redback.htm

If anybody looks like coming close to our list of dangerous lifeforms, I'll start on the seas around our beautiful shore......... Oh, and Freightdawg, the reason why everybody from Oz seems so cheerful when you meet them is that they aren't here where the bities and beasties are!
