Bluegrass has antecedents in earlier string band music and folk music of Appalachia and the South. The music itself may well be thought of as an extension of the Southern Mountain tradition of folk music (Alan Lomax called it "folk music with overdrive") but the songs written recently for bluegass are more akin to popular music. Listening to the lyrics of recent bluegrass songs, you can definitely hear the influences of the popular songwriter in the preoccupation with unrequited love themes that borrow from pop songs and some of the lyrics of Nashville songwriters.
