Dreaded Thumbpick Odd instruments I've seen or nearly seen (67* d) Odd instruments I've seen or nearly seen 18 Dec 04

I was riding down the road yesterday morning and my mind turned to instruments I've seen, then progressed to instruments that I've seen but can't remember what they're called. Finally, in that weird way that my mind works, to instruments that I've nearly seen.   I thought "Hey, other mudcatters are probably in the same boat" that it might make for an interesting thread.... So I'll kick it off.

Here are some that come to mind
Banjo Guitar - Is there a Guitar Banjo and how does it differ?

Banjo Mandolin - I know I've seen a Manjo but I can't remember which has the skin head and which has has double course strings or maybe they're just the same thing like a harmonica.

Banjo Uke - Is there also a Uke Banjo?

Banjorine - Instrument for a tiny child or 5 strings stretched across a citrus fruit. One of 'em.

Chiranga - somewhere between 3 and 16 strings stretched across the belly of a dead armadillo.
Chimichanga - A Chiranga with the live armadillo left in.

Harp Guitar - 9 strings over a wooden box with three of them hanging out in the air.
7-String Guitar - John Koerner used to play one of these things.
Tenor Guitar - One of the Kington Trio played this. I think it was because he didn't want to be seen with a ukelele.

Humphrey - Huge anglo (or maybe English) concertina. Takes four people to play it. One to push the bellows and one to pull. One to push in the buttons and the fourth to wrench 'em out when they stick. See Dick Swain about this. Or Alistair Anderson.

Dill Pickle - one of those tin whistle like instruments that they play in Kosher delis. Comes with a rag to wipe the table. Craig Johnson is a master at this but he's a strange duck and swallows them.

Balalaika - A cajun isosceles triangle with a long wooden neck and three strings. Rings like silver, Shines like gold.

Mandola - Big mandolin used as an oar in Venice when the paddle gets away.

Musical Saw - OY! Played by masochists like Art Thieme. Who else would take a sharp toothed tool used to cut wood and put it near their privates?

Musical Chain Saw - Above used for bluegrass.

Washtub Bass - Better used for laundry.

Dulceola - No it's not a combo of a dulcimer and a mandola. It's that thing that that kid in Peanuts plays. Or maybe it's Andy Cohen's 2 inch wide ivory-keyed instrument.

Piano Accordian - Only knows Lady of Spain and Beer Barrel Polka. Played by pushing around a dance floor.

Hammered Dulcimer - The only thing one should do with a dulcimer.

Cymbalom - Hammered dulcimer played at a wide screen movie.

Kettle Drums - What they fry potato chips in.

Ear drums - Hamboning the side of your head.

Drum Sticks - parts of a bird.

There is a never ending stream of junk running through my brain. I will stop and let others add....      or not.
