There are a number of ways to gain attention in a community. Among them: 1. kindness 2. knowledge/wisdom 3. shouting and vulgarity #s 1 and 2 are difficult. They require skill and/or sacrifice. #3 is easy, requires little effort, and gets results. This community is little about knowledge or wisdom anymore (the death of the knowledgable, the moving on of the wise). Now it's just a crowded house and juvenile behavior gets its desired response. Most people would rather get the right kind of attention, but after a prolonged time any attention will do. And it usually only takes a person or two to cross the line and it's as though a dam breaks. There are ways that vulgarity can be utterly hilarious and entertaining. Catspaw used to do it all the time. The difference is manifold -- 1. a balance in the offering, 2. talent/true wit to the writing, 3. timing, 4. knowing your reader(s).
