There's an old adage in the US that the best weapon for household personal protection is a pump-action shotgun. The sound of jacking a round into the firing chamber is distinctive and unmistakeable. Upon hearing it, any intruder with a tenth of a brain will immediately drop whatever is in his hands, raise his hands over his head, shit himself, and possibly have a coronary.
