As with many of Woody's songs, it's nearly impossible to separate the traditional base from Woody's own additions. Think of his versions of Lonsome Valley and Gypsy Davy for two other examples. An even better example is how Woody transformed John Hardy into Johnny Hard, not only adding his own text but also giving the title a sexual meaning that was absent from the traditional version.
