Dharmabum MUSICAL COMPENSATIONS (9) MUSICAL COMPENSATIONS 06 Feb 05

As the inevitable aging process takes over,we're all faced with limited physical capabilities to some extent.(Though mine's not so much from aging as I'm only 51)
These limitations may or may not effect the way to which you approach your music, but for those of us who've had to deal with it on that level,I thought you might like to share some thoughts on the subject about the compensations you've made.
Over the past few years I've had to deal a bit more with the effects caused by the progression of M.S. therefore I've had to take a different approach to the way I play my instruments.
I've found that switching to a smaller body parlor guitar with a twelve fret scale, has helped a bit to extend my playing time as I'm not having to stretch my arm as far.
I've also taken up mandolin which I find way more "user friendly" to a condition that weakens the limbs.
I've remedied the problem of slipping picks by switching over to a Herco thumbpick. Though sometimes I have to use a little tape to keep from knocking it off.(still searching for a better approach).
Other than changing my style of playing from fingerpicking to a more basic strumming, these are a few of the compensations I've made to keep playing my music.
So any different approaches you've taken, changes or compensations you've made to keep the music alive, that you'd like to share, please do.
Even an alteration to an instrument to adapt to a different style of playing may be interesting to hear about.

Now,if I could just find a cure for this damned C.R.S.!
