Check out Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band. Recorded this in the sixties sometime, but the song is obviously older than that. I have a vague recollection of it being an older song that JK "fixed up" a little. A lot of the stuff JK recorded was old jugband material originally recorded in the 20s and 30s. animaterra - your roommate must have learned it from them, or vice versa, the lyrics are identical.
