So much has changed since the old thread I thought it was time we set up a new one. So here is all the information you could ever need about our British folk radio show, Cool as Folk.

1. What is it?:

Cool as Folk is a weekly hour-long radio show playing traditionally-based British folk music in all of its forms. Presented by Chris Conder and Fee Nutbrown, it is on Reading University's Junction11 radio station.

2. When is it on?:

WE HAVE A NEW DAY AND TIME SLOT! We now broadcast the show on Wednesdays 9-10pm during term time. However, you can listen back to it directly from the Junction11 website for a week after the show, or visit the archive page that normally stores three months worth of shows.

3. How do I listen to the show?:

Well, if you are in the Reading, England then you can listen live on 1287am. However, for those listening online there are three options:

·        Listening live Wednesday 9-10pm: Go to www.1287am.com . In the top left corner there is a 'Now' box that should say 'Cool as Folk' and underneath that is a blue hyperlink saying 'listen live'. Click on it. This will take you to a page which allows you to pick a media player and quality that suits your computer and Internet connection.
·        Listening for up to a week after the show: Go to www.1287am.com . Click 'schedule' in the left hand column. This will take you to the schedule page. From there click on 'Cool as Folk' at 2100 on Wednesday. This will take you to our page. Now click 'Listen to Wednesday's show at 10pm'.
·        Listening back over a week after the show: Go to http://logs.1287am.com . Click on the month the show you wanted was broadcast. From there, click on the day the show went out. This opens the day's schedule. From there click on the button saying 'Listen to Hour' next to 'Cool as Folk'. A window will come up asking if you want to open or save it. Open it.

These websites are all linked from our website at www.coolasfolk.co.uk . Any problems, try Troubleshooting below or contact us.

4. Do you have technical/sound problems:

I'm pleased to say (touch wood) that the technical problems that we had early on are all sorted. The playback has been working fine for a while, and the background hum is gone! If you do have any problems check 'Troubleshooting' below or contact us.

5. Where can I find more information or contact you?:

We have a website for the show at www.coolasfolk.co.uk (maintained by St. Fee) which got all of our playlists, links, interviews and reviews and a link to our flashy new forum message board thingy.

Please come along to our message board and say hi, discuss the show, folk music or whatever else you fancy. We really, really appreciate people popping in and saying hello so we know who is listening. We've moved it especially so it no longer has the annoying floaty advert! You can get there directly at http://www.freebb.com/?freebb=coolasfolk or by clicking 'forum' in the left-hand column at www.coolasfolk.co.uk . You can send me and Fee private messages there too.

You can email us at coolasfolkradioshow@yahoo.co.uk

You can message me or Fee on here!

If you are listening live online please join us in the Junction11 chatroom. This means we can chat to you as we do the show and you can do your bit by pointing out things like me forgetting to put Fee's mic up! From www.1287am.com go to 'chat' in the left hand column. This opens a page where you click 'Chat Online'. This takes you to a little thingy where you can enter a nickname (you don't have to register) and Login. Easy!

6. Troubleshooting:

If you've got a problem and this doesn't help, either email us or better still go to our forum and post in the 'Technical problems' thread. Then the other listeners who are probably more technically savvy than us can help you.

·        How do I listen to the archive using Linux?: Find a Cool as Folk programme and click to "download programme" to get PROGRAM.mp3 file. Type mpg123 PROGRAM.mp3 . (This from Colin Cotter, thanks.)
·        When I listen back or use the archive I don't get folk music: Two possibilities. Firstly it might just be the end of the last track from my more eclectic show Random Noises which goes out the hour before. Give it a second!
Secondly, the shows are still archived as 'Cool as Folk' when we are not on air for the holidays and the computer plays random songs ('the Jukebox Junction').
·        I got cut off before you finished the show!: We try not to run over time anymore due to complaints from people listening back, but it may happen occasionally and sometimes we decide to do an extra long show for the hell of it! If you've heard an hour and we get cut off, simply click 'Listen to Wednesday's Show at 10pm' from the Cool as Folk page at www.1287am.com or click on 'Dave's Hour of Power' show at 11pm from the archive.

7. What kind of music do you play?:

There's three rules: It has to be of British origin, has to be rooted in the tradition and has to be good! Having said British, there is a strong bias towards English music, with a bit of Scottish and Welsh. At the moment we're not playing Irish music, but it's a matter that's up for discussion on our forum-message-board-thingey.

Go and have a look at our playlists at www.coolasfolk.co.uk

8. Why should I listen?:

Well, I can honestly say that the show has already proved much more popular than I dared hope, and we've had a great response from the online folk scene. Thank you all. People seem to like the music and our 'charmingly shambolic' presenting style! There's a great big old thread about the show at http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=73665 where many people have said nice things. To pick out a few quotes:

Diane Easby – 'Cool as Folk is stirring up so much interest in all the 'right stuff''

Lizzie Cornish (yes, Diane and Lizzie agree!) – 'I'm sitting here tuned in to last week's Cool As Folk Show and I'm swooning over a radio programme […] This is seriously good music guys!'

Mary Humphries – 'Great radio show - you are doing a wonderful job of
playing stuff that no-one on the BBC is bothering with'

Peter Standing – 'You are a beacon of light'

fRoots magazine has been very supportive, calling us 'charmingly shambolic and pretence free' and publishing a 'Cool as Folk 10' of our top albums at the time. And Reading University's Student Union presented us with the Silver Award for 'Best Specialist Show'.

And for added appeal, we have been known to have a few exclusives, such as the world premieres of Bellowhead's E.P.onymous (thanks to John Spiers) and Mawkin's Extended Procrastination as well as an early copy of Eliza Carthy's Rough Music. AND we've had live visits from Hilary James and Roger Watson of Boka Halat and TAPs. Think that's all!

9. Can I send you records/demos:

Definitely. We rely on record companies and artists sending us releases to keep up to date and eclectic. We are always looking to promote new talent and are happy to consider demos or self recorded albums as well. Anything that doesn't meet the genre criteria have still got a decent chance of getting a play on my general show, Random Noises, which goes out in the hour before Cool as Folk. Contact us in any of the multiple ways above and we'll give you a mailing address.

10. Can I send you gig/festival dates:

Yes. We can't guarantee we'll read everything out, but there's a fair chance, especially if they are gigs near Reading. We might even use them as a link to play something by the artist. You can also post such things on our messageboard in the 'Goings On' section.

11. What is Random Noises?:

Random Noises is the name of my other show which goes out the hour before Cool as Folk (and therefore also has a new time slot: Wednesdays 8-9pm). It is a far more eclectic affair where I basically play whatever has taken my fancy of late, but there is often a lot of rootsy music in there. I post the playlists in the Cool as Folk forum. Anything you want to send me that doesn’t fit the bill for Cool as Folk could well get an airing there!

Sorry for such a long post, but at least all the info's here! Please do give us a listen and spread the word to your friends. And a final big thank you to all the Mudcatters who have supported us so far, this is where it all started!

Chris
