Sheila Douglas's book "Come gie's a sang" says: "Ray Fisher learned this as a fragment from Jeannie Robertson, consisting of verses 1, 2 and 6, and added the other verses herself, which she felt were in keeping with the song". There is also a long paragraph about the song at page 217 of "Jeannie Robertson: Emergent Singer, Transformative Voice".
