Shambles - in re-reading your query I see that you ask about "well known" tunes. I believe that Scruggs does Home Sweet Home in a D tuning of some kind. It depends if you're doing 3-finger picking or clawhammer. The 3-finger Scruggs style mainly sticks to G - or that form capoed up to A, Bb, B, etc. A lot of well known tunes in clawhamnmer style go to the double-C, open C tunings - as mentioned above.
