Anti-Semitism is an insidious phenomenon that is far more widespread than appears on the surface. Old prejudices die hard. People who probably don't even consider themselves bigoted have made vicious anti-semitic comments to me, not realizing that I'm Jewish. Such comments are inevitably accompanied by the sort of nudge-nudge-wink-wink "just between us" gestures indicating that they know they are saying something un-P.C., but are quite sure that I--and everyone else--agrees with them.

There is also a widespread, not-so-subtle anti-semitism in the guise of being pro-Israel and honoring Jews being played out in the beliefs of born-again Christians who believe that Jews and Israel play a big part in Christ's return to earth--that ultimately involves the Jews being wiped out and going to hell like all the other poor slobs who haven't been born again into the true faith. Scary that this belief permeates the highest levels of U.S. government and is influencing foreign policy--not that any born-again policy maker would ever admit it.

Ever wonder why the "No Child Left Behind" act is named remarkably like the "Left Behind" book series fictionally depicting the entire born-again scenario?
