Funnily enough, my grandfather (Polish/Pomeranian Jew) when growing up in 1930-40s America, was teased a lot for looking Indian. I don't really think photographers deliberately selected clean faces, quite a few of them were interested in race and that, plus there was a theory kciking around that they were Jewish or of other European ancestry. I just think most Indians have little facial hair.
