Maybe Child was offended by the idea that the daughter explained fornication by claiming she was praying over the bible. If "keach" usually meant "hoist," I don't see Child being offended by it, no matter what additional meaning it may have carried. Even clean puns were generally considered during the nineteenth century as "the lowest form of humor," so I'd be surprised if Child would go out of his way to look for one, only to condemn it. I could be wrong, of course.
