Roger never was a great singer or a particularly distinctive bassist, his strengths were his ideas rather than the quality of his performance. Floyd got on fine without him in commercial terms, but artistically? Both Momentary lapse of reason and The division bell lacked bite. They were perfectly good Dave Gilmour albums, but compared to stuff like Animals and Wish you were here they're pretty insipid. It's probably fair to argue that The wall and especially The final cut were Waters solo albums, his dominance was too strong on those Perhaps like Lennon and McCartney, these are two blokes who brought out the best in each other but just couldn't sustain a friendship
