Funnily enough there is yet another song about the Cardrona Valley besides 'Farewell to the Gold' - it's called Gin and Raspberry and was written by an English singer Martin Curtis who now lives down that way.

This beautiful valley was the site of a goldrush in 1863 and Curtis' song concerns a tunnelling working, where the all the diggers on the claim were 'shouted' the titular beverage by the owners whenever the paydirt yielded an ounce to the bucketload.

In those days there was plenty of music wafting around courtesy of the Irish miners. One legendary fiddler and pipe player was named Paddy Galvin who apparently, so the story goes, was such a natural musician that even after falling asleep in the bar, he just kept on playing...
