Good funk is characterised by Blues and modal type harmony - 7#9, and other chords mentioned in earlier threads Syncopated rhythms - often semi-quaver type syncopation. Mr James Brown stresses the importance of the first beat of the bar. Bass is often mixed louder than in other styles of music. These are generalisations but for more details listen to James Brown, Earth WInd and Fire, George Russell and then some more James Brown. And one last bit of advice..... Get on the good foot.
