Chet, I don't have time just now to respond in detail. For now I hope it will be enough simply to state that in the tradition of U.S. law, copyright is a means to an end. To my mind, the best single word for that end is freedom. Such concepts as "ownership" and "property" are not fundamental to copyright as I view it, but are only incidental, and should be allowed into the language of copyright only as long as they don't obscure the ultimate goal of enhancing our knowledge and freedom. T.
