Derek Lamb died this past Friday at the age of 68 following a long battle with cancer. Although he was best known as an Academy Award winning filmmaker who worked for many years in Montreal at the National Film Board –- he won the best animated short film Oscar in 1979 for "Every Child" -– he was also an engaging folksinger who performed on several occasions at the Golem, the folk club that I ran in the 1970s and '80s. Tomorrow (November 10) morning's edition of Folk Roots/Folk Branches will include an extended tribute to Derek and will include songs from his Folkways album recorded in the early-1960s as well as material from a new and as-of-yet unreleased CD that he finished this year. The tribute will begin at about 9:06 a.m. just after the show's opening. CKUT's live stream, the archived streams and the downloadable 'podcasts' for editions of Folk Roots/Folk Branches from the past two months, can be heard or accessed from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches Listen page.
