Ted in red - I must thank you for your last post - it was only when you pointed out the tunings of the mandolin (GDAE, which I knew) and mandola (CGDA, which I recognised as a viola tuning) that the names made sense: violin is to mandolin as mandola is to viola - probably obvious to the whole world, except me!
